COM:POST have pioneered a fresh approach to dealing with green waste in the floristry industry, a wonderfully simple concept that's been embraced by florists keen to make strides in sustainability in what can be a wasteful industry. The COM:POST team, thanks to their amazing community of florists have collected tonnes upon tonnes of green waste that would otherwise have ended up in landfill, repurposing it into compost used by British growers to grow more flowers and vegetables, closing the loop in spectacular fashion.

Founded by Hannah Martin and Fiona Knowlton, they make a formidable and complementary team. Hannah brings her deep floristry background, while Fiona's is in commercial business development, with a speciality in building businesses for growth. It was Fiona's own personal interest in growing food and flowers that led her to seek out ways to create high-quality compost from excess green waste. That passion, paired with Hannah's industry knowledge and an idea sparked, fittingly, by being sat behind a composting truck laid the foundation for the sustainable success story that is COM:POST.

And there's something delightfully fortuitous about the connections between Phoam Labs and COM:POST that drew us together long before we ever decided to collaborate. Hannah has been a florist for over 25 years and previously worked with Phoam Labs Head of social media, Duncan McCabe together at London florist McQueens, over 15 years ago. We had the pleasure of reconnecting at the Interflora World Cup, where we were both nominated for their sustainability prize.

It was still very early days for their fledgling idea, but we could see straight away they had a brilliant concept and the drive to make it a huge success. It's been a real pleasure watching them grow, and seeing how loyally florists have taken it to heart.

We've stayed in regular contact as we've developed Phoam and brought it to market, and have enjoyed presenting together at Rachel Wardley from Tallulah Rose Flower School sustainability workshop at the Garden Museum.

So this partnership feels entirely natural as we join forces to tackle floral waste in the industry.

We met Fiona and Hannah back in 2023, right as they were starting out, and have watched in amazement at what they've built in such short order. They're diverting hundreds of tonnes of floral waste from landfill, and doing it in the chicest brown paper bags going. According to the industrial composting facilities COM:POST works with, Phoam actually enhances the quality of the compost. We are united by a shared belief: beauty shouldn't have to create waste that lasts forever."

Here's how it works

COM:POST members can now order boxes of Phoam, delivered straight alongside their green waste bags.

Once you're done with your arrangement, Phoam goes in the same bag as your floral waste, which will be composted locally and returned to British growers as nutrient-rich compost.

Because Phoam is plant-based and petrochemical-free, it breaks down alongside your green waste. Its bulk also helps the composting process, adding structure that combines with a variety of green waste to help build a richer, more balanced compost.
